ارتفع عدد قتلى حرائق الغابات في جزيرة ماوي بولاية هاواي الأمريكية إلى 80 شخصا يوم الجمعة مع تمشيط فرق البحث لأطلال منتجع لاهاينا، وسعى المسؤولون في هاواي إلى تحديد كيفية انتشار اللهب بهذه السرعة عبر المنتجع التاريخي دون تحذير يذكر.
وأصبحت الحرائق الكارثة الطبيعية الأكثر فتكا في تاريخ الولاية بعد أن تخطت كارثة تسونامي التي أودت بحياة 61 شخصا على جزيرة هاواي الكبرى في 1960 بعد انضمام هاواي إلى الولايات المتحدة.
وقال المسؤولون إن فرق البحث التي تستعين بكلاب مدربة على البحث عن الجثث قد تعثر على مزيد من ضحايا الحرائق التي أتت على ألف مبنى وشردت الآلاف، وهو ما يتطلب على الأرجح أعواما عديدة ومليارات الدولارات لإعادة البناء بحسب “رويترز”.
وقالت سلطات ماوي في بيان إن حريق لاهاينا الذي انتشر من الغابة إلى البلدة لم ينته بعد لكن تم احتواؤه بنسبة 85 بالمئة. وتم احتواء حريقين آخرين في الجزيرة بنسبتي 80 و50 %.
وبعد ثلاثة أيام من وقوع الكارثة، لم يتضح بعد ما إذا كان بعض السكان تلقوا أي تحذيرات قبل أن تلتهم النيران منازلهم.
وتحتوي الجزيرة على صفارات إنذار للتحذير من الكوارث الطبيعية والتهديدات الأخرى لكن يبدو أنها لم تنطلق أثناء الحريق.
